Public education is under attack across Canada. All governments, alongside their friends in the senior administration of colleges and universities, are pushing for academic and learning environments to be increasingly tied to the interests of big business. The cost of tuition continues to rise and, on average, undergraduate students are leaving university with $27,000 in debt and graduate students with $41,000, and are being told they have to "accept" precarious work and poverty. This is a system built for the rich, leaving behind working class, poor, Indigenous, racialized, disabled, and LGBTQ2SI students.
We have seen pockets of important mobilizations across Canada, however, free education and a Pan-Canadian Post-Secondary Act can only be won by building student power, from the unity and militancy of students in a Pan-Canadian student movement, with Indigenous students, and students French-speaking, and students from English-speaking Canada working in solidarity with one another’s struggles, while respecting the self-determination of each nation over the direction of their struggle.
Education is our right. We know that the government of Canada won't wilfully give it to us, so we are going to make them.
