Students Deliver Election Message Door-to-Door
Ontarians Encouraged to Vote for Affordable Post-Secondary Education

Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario

Wednesday, October 03, 2007

TORONTO--

Today the Canadian Federation of Students–Ontario launched a mass leafleting campaign aimed at educating voters on post-secondary education issues in preparation for the Ontario general election and referendum on electoral reform.

College and university students delivered the Federation's report card on the main political parties' platforms and information about the Students for Electoral Reform campaign door-to-door in the Toronto Centre, Trinity-Spadina, and York West ridings. The Ontario Election 2007 Political Party Report Card gives each major party a letter grade on six different categories: tuition fees, ancillary
fees, student debt, post-secondary education funding, quality of education, and system design.

"Post-secondary education is crucial for the success of our province's economy and whether it's affordable has an immediate impact on the bottom line for most families," said Jen Hassum, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students–Ontario. "Voters should know which parties' policies will make it harder to send their children to college or university and drive students deeper into debt."

Students in Mississauga, Ottawa and Sudbury also delivered the report card and electoral reform leaflet door-to-door. Students' election materials will be delivered with canvass blitzes in other ridings in the Toronto area and various ridings across the province through the end of the week.

"Through public opinion polls, petitions and in the streets, voters consistently express their desire for lower tuition fees and the elimination of student debt. They even elected the current government on a promise to stop fee hikes and do things differently," said Hassum. "This election is the best opportunity for voters across the province to send the message that high tuition fees and deeper debt are unacceptable."

Students are calling on the next government to stop tuition fee hikes, reduce tuition fees and immediately end illegal ancillary fees.

The Canadian Federation of Students–Ontario unites more than 300,000 college and university students and 35 students' unions across the province.
